NICU at Norwalk Hospital

Norwalk Hospital’s Jeffrey Peter Bauer Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides excellent care for newborns. As a Level III NICU, we combine the necessary technology and equipment with a comfortable, supportive environment.

NICU at Norwalk Hospital: Why choose us?

When your infant is critically ill, a team that provides excellent neonatal care with warmth and empathy can help put your mind at ease. We also aim to create an environment where you have privacy to spend time with your baby. When you choose Norwalk Hospital, you and your family benefit from:

  • 24/7 care
Neonatologists, doctors with special training in caring for newborns ensure that babies receive all the care they need. All nurses also have training in high-risk neonatal intensive care.
  • Access to pediatric specialists
Through our alliance with Connecticut Children’s, a nationally ranked pediatric health system, your newborn will be cared for by a team of pediatric specialists in our Level III NICU. Because of this relationship, your family has access to any necessary subspecialty services, such as cardiology, neurology or urology.
  • Donor milk
We participate in a donor milk program to provide breast milk to NICU babies. The NICUs at Norwalk and Danbury Hospitals provide a breast milk-only diet to our smallest babies.
  • Comfort and support
Our NICU has multiple large windows that let in lots of sunlight, which has been shown to be beneficial for critically ill babies. We also provide a parent room where you can be alone with your baby.
  • Breastfeeding support
Research has shown that breast milk can help premature babies with growth and development. We have a breastfeeding area where mothers can meet one-on-one with lactation consultants.
Tiny Miracles

Through a partnership with The Tiny Miracles Foundation, parents can participate in mentoring sessions. Parents who have previously had babies in the NICU volunteer to lead these mentorship groups.

The Tiny Miracles Foundation also supplies welcome bags upon entry and home care bags after discharge. Families can apply for emergency financial assistance on an as-needed basis.
