Nuvance Health offers innovative options including genetic testing, advanced diagnostic imaging, minimally invasive surgery and the full range of surgical treatments. We also perform research, including clinical trials, to identify promising new treatments and improve patients’ quality of life.

When you or a loved one are diagnosed with cancer, you’ll begin a treatment regimen that may include chemotherapy and radiation. These treatments are lifesaving, but they may cause heart complications such as palpitations, chest pain or heart failure.

Specialists at the Nuvance Health Cancer Institute and Heart and Vascular Institute collaborate to prevent and reduce these side effects. Your care team develops a plan to protect your heart during and after cancer treatment.

How cardio-oncology treatment works

Nuvance Health integrates your oncology care with the expertise of our nationally recognized cardiovascular program. Your cardio-oncology care begins right after cancer diagnosis.

We assess your chances of developing heart disease due to cancer treatment. Your oncologist coordinates with your cardiologist to develop a baseline evaluation of your heart, using imaging tests such as:

  • 3-D echocardiogram: Using high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to capture multiple images from different angles, creating a 3-D image of your heart
  • Myocardial strain imaging: Assessing the function of your heart muscle (myocardium) using cardiac ultrasound
  • Cardiac MRI: Using MRI scans of the heart for optimal imaging and to investigate any concerning findings, such as masses or blood clots

We create a personalized care plan and monitor your results to help protect your heart. Your skilled and experienced care team can recognize and resolve heart issues early in cancer treatment.

Ongoing support for your heart

Keeping your heart healthy is a lifelong journey. You receive ongoing monitoring after cancer treatment to check for early signs of heart disease and ensure you’re feeling well.
