The mitral valve is located between your heart’s two left chambers. The valve contains two flaps of tissue (leaflets) that open and close to keep blood flowing in one direction. When it doesn’t close completely, blood leaks backward into your heart (mitral regurgitation).

Mitral regurgitation burdens your heart and lungs. Left untreated, it can cause serious problems—such as heart failure, when your heart can’t pump enough blood.

Nuvance Health offers an advanced procedure called transcatheter mitral valve repair with MitraClip™ for those who qualify. This minimally invasive technique can also be an option for people who aren’t strong enough for open-heart surgery.

  • How MitraClip™ works

Unlike surgery, transcatheter mitral valve repair with MitraClip doesn’t require opening the chest and temporarily stopping the heart. Interventional cardiologists access the mitral valve by guiding a thin tube (catheter) through a vein in your leg to reach your heart.

The MitraClip device is a small clip that attaches to your mitral valve via a catheter. It treats mitral regurgitation by allowing the valve to close more completely, restoring normal blood flow through your heart.

  • Benefits of MitraClip™
Studies show that one year after getting MitraClip, patients had an improved quality of life and ability to do daily tasks. They also had fewer visits to the hospital for complications due to heart failure.
  • Eligibility for MitraClip™
If you have mitral valve regurgitation, and your doctor doesn’t recommend open heart surgery, you may qualify for MitraClipTalk with your doctor about your eligibility.
  • Comprehensive care for mitral valve regurgitation
MitraClip may be part of your customized treatment plan for mitral regurgitation, which may also include heart medication. Keeping your heart healthy is a lifelong journey. We support you with follow-up appointments to monitor your heart’s function and ensure you’re feeling well.
