Gynecological Surgery at Nuvance Health: Why Choose Us?

When you need surgery, it’s comforting to know that you will receive care from well-trained surgeons. At Nuvance Health, we use innovative techniques and a friendly approach to ensure that you have easy access to the exceptional care you deserve. Highlights of our program include:

  • Easy-to-navigate care:
When you schedule surgery with us, a patient navigator walks you through each step of your treatment. Your gynecological surgeon also works closely with infertility specialists to provide fertility preservation options, if relevant.
  • Minimally invasive approaches:
Surgeons perform up to 80% of gynecological procedures with minimally invasive approaches. These techniques enable you to return home more quickly, recover faster and get back to your usual activities sooner.
  • Surgeons who are leaders:
Leading gynecological surgeons at Nuvance Health train the next generation of surgeons. We have residency and fellowship programs for gynecologists who want to specialize in minimally invasive surgery.
  • Specialized procedures:
We have one of the only centers in Connecticut where gynecological oncologists offer hyperthermia intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). This procedure involves circulating chemotherapy inside your abdominal cavity to treat advanced cancer. HIPEC may offer improved cancer survival outcomes.

What is a Gynecological Surgeon?

Gynecological surgeons specialize in procedures that affect the female reproductive system. Gynecological surgeons complete a four-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology, plus additional fellowships in OB-GYN-specific procedures. These fellowships include experience in gynecologic oncology or minimally invasive surgery.

What is Minimally Invasive Surgery?

During a minimally invasive surgery, your surgeon makes small incisions and inserts a tiny, high-tech camera through the incisions. We project the camera’s image on a large screen. Your surgeon views this image and uses small surgical tools to complete the operation precisely and efficiently. With this approach, your surgeon has a more detailed view of your body and can operate through only a few small incisions.

We also use the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol, so that you can quickly return to your usual activities. Benefits of MIS and ERAS include:

  • Decreased pain
  • Decreased risk of complications
  • Faster recovery
  • Less scarring
  • Shorter hospital stays

Robotic surgery

Robotic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) that uses robotic devices. These devices allow your surgeon to operate surgical tools with greater precision. For example, your surgeon may use a device that mimics the movements of a human hand with steadiness and accuracy. Danbury Hospital has enhanced its surgical capabilities by introducing the Da Vinci 5 robotic-assisted system, allowing surgeons to perform minimally invasive procedures with greater precision.

There are many types of robotic systems that surgeons use. When you have robotic surgery, your surgeon is in control of the robotic device the entire time.
