A new alternative: A patient’s journey to weight-loss without surgery

“When I found out I was considered overweight for my height, I knew I needed a medical professional to make the right changes and really commit to shedding weight,” the Rhinebeck resident added

For a working mom who is always on the go, Courtney Boehm sought weight-loss alternatives that did not require surgery.

In September 2020, she met with Jennifer Scheffler, who has spent many years in the field of bariatric and obesity medicine through a non-surgical weight-loss approach, holds a doctor of nursing practice degree and sees patients in the Nuvance Health Medical Practice general surgery office on the campus of Northern Dutchess Hospital.

While at-home diets seemed effective at first, Boehm says the weight always came back, sometimes worse. “When I found out I was considered overweight for my height, I knew I needed a medical professional to make the right changes and really commit to shedding weight,” the Rhinebeck resident added.

Down 47 pounds in nine months(three pounds shy of her goal), her daily routine includes 30 to 40 minutes of exercise on her newly purchase spin bike, jogging or Barre classes and curating meals that are both fun and deliver a healthy dose of fuel for everyone in the family.

“Our Rhinebeck location can help people with non-surgical weight loss using metabolism, genetics, healthy eating, physical activity and medications for a lasting healthier lifestyle,” Scheffler said. “Courtney’s confidence has positively shaped her mindset in a way she now knows she can achieve everything she sets her mind to.”

Boehm, whose daughters share great pride in their mother’s transformation, said Scheffler and her team helped her realize “losing weight is not about counting calories or macros. … It’s about choosing realistic ways to eat healthier foods, change your metabolism naturally and create exercise routines that challenge you in the right ways,” she concluded.
