New research shows that bariatric surgery may lower the risk of breast cancer in women with obesity. Find out what this new research means and if bariatric surgery is right for you.

By Brian R. Binetti, MD, Chair of Surgery, Director of Metabolic and Bariatric, Nuvance Health

Bariatric surgery may lower the risk of breast cancer in women who are considered obese, according to new research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The research found that bariatric surgery was associated with lower incidences of breast cancer in women who underwent bariatric surgery compared to usual non-surgical obesity care.

Bariatric surgery and breast cancer study results

Many research studies explored the relationship between bariatric surgery and breast cancer in women with obesity. These studies aim to understand if bariatric surgery can protect against breast cancer and its long-term effects on breast cancer risk.

A recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that bariatric surgery reduced the risk of developing breast cancer by 35% in women with obesity. Another study in the Annals of Surgery followed women with obesity for 10 years, showing those who underwent bariatric surgery had a lower risk of developing breast cancer compared to those who did not.

Bariatric surgery and breast cancer prevention in women with obesity

Bariatric surgery may help lower risk of developing breast cancer in women with obesity. Understanding this impact is crucial, given the rising prevalence of obesity and its link to many health issues, including breast cancer.

Obesity has been associated with breast cancer, so it’s important to explore interventions like bariatric surgery that may reduce this risk. Research shows promising results, indicating that bariatric surgery might protect women with obesity from breast cancer.

“Excess weight is a health issue that can increase the risk of breast cancer and multiple other cancers. Fat tissue produces estrogen, and higher estrogen levels can fuel the growth of certain types of breast cancer. This study adds to the growing evidence that maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for reducing breast cancer risk,” said Susan K. Boolbol, MD, system chief of breast surgical oncology and the breast program at Nuvance Health.

Obesity and breast cancer: The connection

Obesity is a global epidemic affecting millions. Research has shown a strong link between obesity and an increased risk of breast cancer, particularly in postmenopausal women.

Excess body fat, especially around the waist, can lead to hormonal imbalances and inflammation, both contributing to cancer development.

“Obesity not only affects insulin levels but may also lead to chronic inflammation, both of which are linked to increased risk of breast cancer. The connection between weight and breast cancer highlights the importance of weight management in overall cancer prevention,” Dr. Boolbol said.

Factors contributing to this increased risk include:

  • Hormonal imbalances: Adipose tissue produces estrogen, a hormone that can fuel the growth of certain types of breast cancer.

  • Insulin levels: Obesity is often associated with higher insulin levels, promoting tumor growth.

  • Chronic inflammation: Common in obese individuals, chronic inflammation can create an environment favorable for cancer development.

While the link between obesity and breast cancer is concerning, evidence suggests that bariatric surgery may reduce this risk. Bariatric surgery not only helps achieve weight loss but also improves metabolic health, potentially lowering cancer risk.

Bariatric surgery as a potential protective measure against breast cancer

Research suggests bariatric surgery can reduce breast cancer risk by promoting substantial weight loss, leading to positive changes in hormonal balance and metabolic function. Weight loss after bariatric surgery may reduce estrogen production and improve insulin sensitivity, both linked to breast cancer development. It can also decrease markers of inflammation, potentially mitigating cancer development processes.

Considerations for women with obesity

If you are a woman with obesity, considering bariatric surgery as a preventive measure against breast cancer may be beneficial. However, bariatric surgery is not suitable for everyone. Eligibility depends on factors like overall health, body mass index (BMI) and existing medical conditions. Consulting with a doctor is essential to determine if you are a good candidate. Learn more about the BMI calculator.

Implementing lifestyle changes, such as a healthy diet, regular physical activity and stress management can complement the protective effects of bariatric surgery. Regular screenings and follow-up care, including mammograms and clinical breast exams, are crucial for maintaining breast health.

Understanding bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery helps individuals with obesity achieve weight loss by altering their digestive system. This surgery is often recommended for those who have tried other weight loss methods without success and face serious health issues related to obesity.

There are different types of bariatric surgeries, each with their benefits and risks. The most common types include gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, and gastric banding.

  • Gastric bypass: This surgery creates a small pouch in the stomach and reroutes the small intestine to this pouch, limiting food intake and reducing calorie and nutrient absorption.

  • Gastric sleeve: This involves removing a large portion of the stomach, leaving a smaller sleeve-shaped stomach, reducing food intake, and affecting appetite-regulating hormones.

  • Gastric banding: An adjustable band is placed around the upper part of the stomach to create a smaller pouch, restricting food intake and helping you feel full more quickly.

Bariatric surgery can be effective for weight loss and may improve overall health and quality of life. However, it carries risks, including infection, bleeding and complications related to anesthesia. Speaking with your doctor is crucial to assess your situation and provide guidance based on your needs and goals.

The bottom line: Bariatric surgery offers a promising approach to reducing breast cancer risk in women with obesity by promoting weight loss and improving metabolic health. If you’re considering bariatric surgery, contact us to learn more and take the first step towards a healthier future.
