Sharon Hospital, part of Nuvance Health, recently earned a five-star overall hospital rating, the highest possible, from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for quality patient care.
It is the only hospital in Connecticut to receive the highest quality rating for patient care and is one of 407 facilities in the nation to earn the top score.
“This achievement is a testament to the hard work and shared vision of our physicians, nurses, staff and quality teams who strive to offer the best patient experience,” said Dr. Mark Hirko, the hospital’s new president. “It is an honor to be noted as a nationally recognized top-performing hospital. This reinforces our commitment to advancing how we care for patients, taking opportunities to improve our processes and offering services that meet the needs of those we serve.”
Patient experience, readmissions and overall patient safety were areas where Sharon ranked above the national average of the more than 4,500 hospitals measured by the federal agency that publishes the ratings at www.hospitalcompare.gov biannually.
The CMS hospital rating system provides information about the quality of care at Medicare-certified hospitals across the country. The system offers consumers a snapshot view of quality ratings and consumer-reported satisfaction. Ratings are based on several components, such as a survey of patients’ experiences, timely and effective care, complications, readmissions, mortality and value of care.
The five-star rating is one of many recent honors for Sharon Hospital, including a four-star rating from CMS in February 2019 and recognition as a grade “A” hospital in The Leapfrog Group’s Spring and Fall 2019 Safety Grades.
