With an extensive background as a transformational physician executive and community leader, Dr. Alan Kurose will lead the continued growth and success of Nuvance Health Medical Practice.

Dr. Alan Kurose has joined Nuvance Health Medical Practice as president and chief operating officer. In addition to his more than 20 years as a primary care physician, he brings extensive experience in managing medical practices, improving the health of the community and ensuring affordable, quality care. He will also serve as interim chair of primary care.

“Dr. Kurose’s leadership will accelerate our digital healthcare initiatives, patient and employee experiences and quality outcomes,” said Dr. Christopher Lehrach, chief physician executive of Nuvance Health Medical Practice. “He brings significant business leadership skills to Nuvance Health and will be a key partner in advancing our growth and medical and specialty care strategy.”

“I’m excited to be part of the team at Nuvance Health, and grateful for the warm welcome I’ve received. The commitment to serving patients and communities at every level of the organization is inspiring,” Dr. Kurose said. “This is a growing and dynamic system that is driving excellence in patient care, teaching and research. There also is a healthy appetite for innovating to sustainably provide the best possible quality care and experience for the communities we serve.”

Previously, Dr. Kurose served as president and CEO of Coastal Medical, leading its transformation from a traditional primary care practice to an innovative, nationally recognized, tech-enabled, data-driven Accountable Care Organization with best-in-class performance on cost and quality. When Coastal became part of the Lifespan system in 2021, he shepherded its integration into the system as senior vice president for primary care and population health.

Dr. Kurose has pursued his passionate interest in care transformation and payment reform locally, regionally and nationally. In October of 2023, he testified before the U.S. Senate Budget Committee to discuss how managing the care of patients and health of populations can reduce healthcare costs.

Dr. Kurose has served as a co-chair of the Rhode Island Health Care Cost Trends Steering Committee and as faculty for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Executive Development Programs in Population Health Management. He also currently serves as Chairman of the Board of the Rhode Island Foundation, which provided $89M in grants to 2500 nonprofit organizations in 2023.
