Doctors aspiring to go into specialized fields of medicine can now train locally at Nuvance Health with five new fellowships offered by the Hudson Valley and Western Connecticut health system.
“Making Nuvance Health a vital destination for fellowships will help us ensure we have the specialists within our region to meet the healthcare needs of our patients and communities,” said Dr. Dereck DeLeon, Nuvance Health’s chief academic officer. “We cannot wait to welcome these fellows into our hospitals come July 2023.”
Northern Dutchess Hospital President Denise George said geriatricians are in high demand as the number of older adults in the country outpaces the number of newly trained specialists in the field.
“By opening up training opportunities like our new geriatric fellowship, we can attract talented doctors,” George said.
In addition, fellowships in hospice and palliative medicine, advanced clinical ultrasound and breast surgical oncology will be based at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY.
“Now is certainly the time to explore the highly rewarding field of palliative care, allowing doctors to help patients and their families navigate complex care decisions and provide expert pain and symptom management during the course of serious illness,” he said.
All five fellowships received their initial accreditation recently from their accrediting agencies: the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Accreditation Council and the Society of Surgical Oncology.

Doctors complete fellowship training after graduating from their core residency programs to become an expert in their sub-specialty area of interest.
In total, Nuvance Health will offer 14 fellowships by summer 2024, including previously approved programs in infectious disease, nephrology, pulmonary, gynecologic surgery and more.
