A self-described “gym rat,” fitness has always been a priority for Gregory Liu. From serving as captain in the United States Air Force to earning his black belt in judo, Liu has spent a lifetime in top physical shape.

Until he wasn’t. On Sept. 18, 2023, Liu awoke to shortness of breath and persistent pain in his jaw. A trip to Northern Dutchess Hospital’s Emergency Department revealed he suffered a heart attack.

“Fitness has always been a part of my lifestyle, as normal as brushing my teeth,” said Liu, 60, of Tivoli. “But what I wasn’t giving enough credence to was a family history of heart disease.”

Liu was sent to Vassar Brothers Medical Center and treated by interventional cardiologist Dr. Louis Kantaros. He required three stents for his blocked arteries.

“Everything went really well. I received excellent care,” said Liu, an investigator for the Dutchess County Public Defender’s Office. “I was cleared to go visit my son in California two days later.”

After completing cardiac rehabilitation at Northern Dutchess Hospital this January, Liu said he now incorporates more cardio and strength training into his routines, as well as increasing his fruit and vegetable intake.

In June, he joined the Nuvance Health Get Fit challenge, a six-week community wellness program where participants log their physical activity, at least 30 minutes per session, to qualify for prizes. Liu logged 57 workouts and was the 2024 first place Get Fit winner.

“Because of my heart attack, I wanted to hold myself accountable,” he said. “I joined Get Fit so that I could keep track of my activity. It’s a great tool for that.”

Liu continues to make fitness a priority, taking judo twice a week, as well as lifting weights and clocking at least 10,000 steps a day.

“I just feel weird if I don’t move around,” he said.
