Sharon Hospital’s Endowed Chair in Primary Care will have a positive impact on surrounding community
The endowment recognizes Dr. Joseph’s unwavering commitment to caring for the Sharon Hospital community and expanding primary care access in the region to better serve patients.
“I am honored to be the Diana and Stephen Goldberg Endowed Chair and hope to make a positive difference in our primary care system,” said Dr. Joseph. “This endowment presents a fortunate opportunity to address prevalent issues in primary care. We require more care and services as we age, and I’m hopeful this endowment will aid in a more effective, more user-friendly system for our older demographic and those who have difficulty accessing it.”
Dr. Joseph is committed to caring for our community
The Goldbergs saw that Dr. Joseph is a thorough, wonderful and experienced clinician committed to caring for our community through his practice.
“It is up to the community to recognize, honor and invest in our clinicians, community hospital and see that it has the resources it needs to thrive and offer the best facilities, doctors, nurses and staff who are dedicated to providing the best care possible,” the Goldbergs said. “We are honored to make this gift and hope to inspire others to join us in giving generously to Sharon Hospital.”

“The Goldbergs have promoted health for vulnerable communities for many years, helping people who they will never meet. I think we should all be inspired by this generous use of their resources to improve services for our community,” Dr. Joseph said.
"We are deeply grateful to Diana and Stephen Goldberg for their remarkable generosity in establishing the Endowed Chair in Primary Care at Sharon Hospital,” said Grace Linhard, chief development officer of Nuvance Health. “Their support honors Dr. Joseph's dedication and advances high-quality primary care for our community, while their generosity is instrumental in our mission to provide exceptional care.”
Philanthropy supports primary care in the Sharon community
The establishment of endowed chairs at Nuvance Health helps strengthen the care the system provides for the community. This is the 18th endowed chair at Nuvance Health and the second endowed chair in primary care.
“Our children and grandchildren are living in the Sharon community. We believe in community health. Having lived in Washington, D.C., for many years and getting involved with the children’s hospital there, we quickly learned of the poverty and living conditions of so many and how it impacted children’s health. We understand the purpose and value of a community needs assessment and hope this gift will make a difference in the care for patients,” the Goldbergs said.
Sharon Hospital continues to be recognized for providing high quality care for our community
In 2024, Sharon Hospital was awarded its fifth consecutive five-star rating by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for quality patient care and is the only hospital in Connecticut to earn this top score. It was one of 83 hospitals nationwide to earn the Vizient award for outstanding clinical quality and performance.
“Sharon Hospital has been a part of the fabric of rural healthcare for more than a century, and it’s the generosity from local families like the Goldbergs that can assist in sustaining our role in the community,” Sharon Hospital President Christina McCulloch said. “I am deeply touched by their gift and extraordinarily proud of Dr. Joseph for receiving this endowment as a symbol of his longstanding commitment to the Sharon Hospital community and its patients.”
