Since joining Nuvance Health in late 2022, heart surgeon Dr. Abeel Mangi projects completing more than 180 valve cases and 120 coronary bypass grafting cases in his first year.

Dr. Mangi has served as chief of cardiac surgery at Vassar Brothers Medical Center since October 2022. He brings a distinguished record of clinical expertise having most recently served as chief cardiac surgeon and chairman of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at Medstar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. Prior to that, he was a professor of cardiac surgery at Yale Medical School in New Haven, Conn., where he was on the faculty for 10 years.
He specializes in complex and re-operative cardiac surgery; catheter-based and minimally invasive aortic and mitral valve repair and replacement, aortic reconstruction and all-arterial coronary bypass grafting.

Dr. Mangi said his typical patients are those with coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease and aortic aneurysms.
In addition to his work as a cardiac surgeon, Dr. Mangi has authored hundreds of publications related to his specialty interests including advances in cardiac intensive care, cardiac surgery, assist devices and treatment of heart failure.
Dr. Mangi earned his medical degree from Brown University in Providence R.I. Following his residency in general surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, he was awarded a postdoctoral National Research Service Award fellowship from the National Institutes of Health for groundbreaking stem cell research that was recognized by the American College of Cardiology.
He completed his fellowship in cardiac surgery and an advanced fellowship in mechanical circulatory support and cardiac transplantation at New York-Presbyterian Medical Center and Columbia University in New York City.
