Cardiac MRI now offered at Northern Dutchess Hospital

Cardiac MRI at Northern Dutchess Hospital

12/04/2024

On a recent Thursday, Joseph Burdowski, MD was at Northern Dutchess Hospital examining images of a patient’s heart in real time to determine whether there was damage or disease.

The cardiologist used cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to analyze the heart’s structure and function, a testing tool that has seen a boom in the last several years.

Northern Dutchess Hospital (NDH) now offers this technology to its heart patients, further enhancing its commitment to exceptional cardiac care.

“It’s expanding all over the country and the world because we realize the potential of how much information we can obtain. The technologies have improved in getting images quickly,” said Dr. Burdowski, director of cardiac MRI at Nuvance Health. “It’s also lower risk than other cardiac imaging modalities because there is no radiation exposure.”

Cardiac MRI is a non-invasive procedure that employs radio waves, a strong magnetic field and a computer to produce highly detailed images of the heart’s structure and function, enabling healthcare providers to diagnose, monitor and treat a wide range of heart conditions, including coronary artery disease, heart failure and congenital heart defects.

Unlike other imaging methods, it does not use radiation, making it a safer choice for patients, particularly those who need regular monitoring. This innovation ensures patients receive accurate and timely diagnoses while minimizing risk.

At Northern Dutchess Hospital, we are dedicated to delivering the highest standard of care,” Radiology Manager Joe Gallivan said. “The availability of cardiac MRI reflects our commitment to providing state-of-the-art diagnostic tools that are close to home and that lead to improved health outcomes for our community.”

Cardiac MRIs are also employed at both Danbury Hospital and Vassar Brothers Medical Center (VBMC). Dr. Burdowski works with a team of MRI technologists and radiologists to conduct the procedures at Danbury Hospital, VBMC and now, NDH.
